My favorite cemeteries are my local ones. Each of these cemeteries is unique and special to me.
To start with they are loaded with local history and some very interesting characters. They are filled with beautiful and interesting tombs and grave sites. Have you ever seen a large granite Celtic Cross designed by Tiffany & Co? The old graveyards in the towns are very captivating. There are still many things I've probably have missed but that is one of the joys of the search.
This does not mean that I don't like other cemeteries. There are great ones all over. I love to visit them when I can.
For me I have very little choice, but I would say Waikumete and Purewa located in Auckland, New Zealand. These are two cemeteries I can always go back too and discover details I missed on my first visit. Often times the harder you look the less you discover, when I'm not things reveal themselves.
My favorite local cemetery is in the heart of downtown Des Moines. I don't have a vast number of cemeteries to choose from around here. My dream is to visit the cemetery in Paris someday. I also hear they have some beautiful cemeteries in Portugal as well!!
Colma... there are so many areas, eras and some of the best headstones I have seen... the best photos are when the fog is coming in late in the afternoon....it's magical.
I've visited hundreds, but I have to agree that the small local cemeteries are by far the most interesting. Here in Portland, we have the huge Riverview Cemetery...probably one of the more beautiful large cemeteries I've ever seen.
Bellefontaine Cemetery in st. Louis, Mo. It is a vast park-like space where many prominent St Louisans are buried. It is a grand old Victorian cemetery with mausolems, angels and I have spent many happy hours there wandering around and taking pictures.
Hmmm.... so hard to pick a favorite... probably the Town of Maine Cemetery in Park Ridge IL. It is a small cemetery but the monuments range from the 1800's to the current year and there are so many original ones. I have tons of pictures that I have taken there.
I would have to say my favorite cemeteries are Bonaventure Cemetery and Laurel Grove Cemetery both in Savannah GA, also Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC. All of these are incredibly beautiful peaceful places and hold special places in my heart.
One of my favorties is Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Trimble County, Kentucky, USA. It sits at the top of a hill/embankment that overlooks the Ohio River. Behind the cemtery are wide open fields. Some new houses have been built on the other side of the fields that sort of spoil the effect. Apprently, the closing scenes from the movie Some Came Running starring Frank Sinatra were shot in this cemetery, too.
I would have to say Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia. It overlooks the Ocmulgee River and has so many beautiful stones, from the very elaborate to the very simple.
Up to this point, I would have to say St. Peter's Cemetery in Salzburg. It is like no other cemtery I have ever been to. I'm heading to London in the Spring to visit the "Magnificent Seven" a ring of Victorian Cemeteries that surround London. I'm especially excited about going to Highgate. So I may have a new favorite when I get back!

Montemarte in Paris has got to be mine, such a variation of superb monuments. this may change as I will be visiting the Necropolis in Glasgow, UK in the spring.
