Why do you "dig" cemeteries?
As an art major in college I visited the 19th century cemetery
where my ancestors are buried, for a photography assignment.

I was immediately enamored by the beautiful grave stones,
statues and mausoleums there. Thus my love of old
cemeteries began.

A photo I took that day was selected to be in the annual
county art exhibit, it is still my favorite cemetery photo.
It's a statue of a gentlemen by the name of Matthias
Hollenback mourning his beloved wife.

The cemetery, which he established in the mid 1800's,
bears his name Hollenback Cemetery.

I love this art form so much that I have devoted a page
to it called Taphophilia on my web site.

19th Century Cemetery Photos For Halloween

I am a Taphophile. Someone who likes old cemeteries. The epitaphs, carvings and monuments are some of my favorite things to photograph. It is a great source when doing genealogy too. This week I visited my favorite haunt, our local cemetery. I went in late afternoon and captured sunny shots, sunset and stayed unti dark! (Don't worry a friend was with me so I was safe. :)

Victorian Mourning Traditions

VICTORIAN MOURNING TRADITIONS

Funerals at the turn of the century were still held at home, in the front parlor, and were by invitation only. If you were invited you attended, it was simply rude and ill mannered to refuse a funeral invitation. Embalming was… Continue
